Huddersfield Narrow Canal gets smile and tip your hat signs

Signs asking people to tip their hats and smile have been introduced on a canal in West Yorkshire as part of a national etiquette campaign.

The Canal & Riverboat Trust installed the signs along the Huddersfield Narrow Canal, near Marsden, to remind people to be polite and respect others.

The waterway is home to Britain's longest canal tunnel.

Opened in 1811, Standedge Tunnel is 3.25 miles (5.2 km) long and was used by boats carrying wool, coal and horse manure.

The tipping the hat slogan dates back to this era, when people doffed their caps as a mark of respect or greeting.
