Twycross Zoo: Baby Asian elephant on show to public

A baby Asian elephant born at Twycross Zoo has gone on public view for the first time.

The female calf was born last week after its 18-year-old mother was artificially inseminated.

It will be looked after by the all-female four-strong herd at the zoo, and will suckle about 11 litres of milk per day from its mother, Noorjahan.

Twycross said the baby elephant, which is yet to be named, was a great addition to the herd, especially as their numbers in the wild were dwindling due to habitat destruction and poaching.
