Residents' fear over Northern Line extension

Residents in south London are calling for plans to put four ventilation shafts in their neighbourhood as part of the extension of the Northern Line to be re-examined.

This month the government announced a £1bn loan guarantee to extend the Underground line from Kennington to Battersea, with the construction of two stations.

But a group in Kennington says the shafts, needed for ventilation and cooling, will lead to a loss of parkland and increase noise and pollution in the residential area.

Transport for London said there would be no permanent loss of park space and is exploring a number of options for the shafts before they are finalised.
