Tower Hamlets mayor fails to stop election threat case

The mayor of Tower Hamlets has failed to stop a legal challenge which has been threatening his election victory.

Four activists launched a petition to void May's election results, which saw Lutfur Rahman elected as Mayor for a second time, on the grounds that the election was marred by vote-rigging, fraud and intimidation - claims Mr Rahman refutes as "smears".

The High Court rejected Lutfur Rahman's attempt to throw out the petition but the judges have asked for additional information surrounding the allegations to be submitted by 18 August before the case can proceed.
