HGVs in London trial safety equipment

New equipment is being trialled in London to try and improve the safety records of trucks and lorries.

Heavy goods vehicles are involved in over half of all cycling deaths in London but account for only 4% of traffic.

Many lorries have blind-spots where drivers cannot see cyclists and some are now using sensors, low windows and very low side guards as part of a trial to improve safety.

BBC London's Transport Correspondent Tom Edwards spoke to Paul Neal an HGV driver, Jackie O'Donovan from O'Donovan Waste Disposal and Sir Peter Hendy from Transport for London.
