Shot submariner Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux wanted to 'protect'

The widow of a naval officer who was shot dead by a junior rating on board a nuclear submarine has said he would have wanted to "protect" his fellow submariners.

Lt Cdr Ian Molyneux was killed by Able Seaman Ryan Donovan while HMS Astute was docked in Southampton in 2011.

Gillian Molyneux, who was speaking at a ceremony where she was awarded the Elizabeth Cross, said her husband "would help people out whenever he could".

"He just wanted to give and, with regards to the day on Astute, he wanted to stop and protect," she said.
