CPS North West chief Nazir Afzal discusses sex abuse cases

The chief prosecutor for the Crown Prosecution Service in the North West has said he has dealt with more historical sexual abuse offences in the past year than in his entire career.

Nazir Afzal, who prosecuted broadcaster Stuart Hall and choirmaster Michael Brewer, said the fact that victims didn't report the crimes many years ago "is the system's failure and not the victims".

Mr Afzal said that the Stuart Hall case showed that victims could be confident of being believed if they came forward.
