WW1 conscientious objector stories go online
The poignant stories of how hundreds of North West men refused to fight in World War One have been made available online for the first time.
The North West had several "hotspots" in Manchester and Lancashire with particularly high numbers of conscientious objectors due to religious and political beliefs.
It is hoped relatives of the 16,000 men on the register will add to their stories on the Lives of the First World War, external website, documenting the often brutal treatment they were forced to endure.
BBC North West Tonight's Naomi Cornwell reports.
