Wigan food waste cafe Fur Clemt aims to feed 5,000

A cafe has begun feeding a Greater Manchester multitude by turning 11 tonnes of food destined for landfill into 5,000 meals for the community.

The Fur Clemt cafe, which takes its name from the local dialect term for "very hungry", has been opened by the Real Junk Food project and will see customers decide the cost of their meal on a "pay as you feel" basis.

The project, which aims to tackle food waste, has registered more than 100 cafes across the world.

Most deliveries come from wholesalers and are made up of food which is nearing its expiration date, is not of best quality or has damaged packaging.

The team behind the cafe said it was "primarily run by local people for local people", whose "priority" was reducing food waste.
