The 'first black Othello'

Ira Aldridge is considered to be the first black actor to have played both Othello and King Lear.

Born in the US in 1807, he performed around Europe in a number of Shakespearian roles, including the part of Scottish king Macbeth.

His portrait was the first object bought in 1827 for The Royal Manchester Institution, which later became Manchester Art Gallery.

Eno Eruotor from BBC North West Tonight reports.
