Cardinal Vincent Nichols to speak out for the poor

One of the Catholic church's newest cardinals has said he hopes to use his new status to give a voice to people living in poverty.

Cardinal Vincent Nichols, who was born in Crosby on Merseyside, was speaking at a special mass in Liverpool to celebrate his new title.

"We have to have open eyes to see how many people, some with great harshness, end up in destitution," he said.

The Archbishop of Westminster was appointed by Pope Francis last month.

As one of 19 new cardinals, he will be eligible to elect future popes, until he reaches the age of 80.
