Rare Sumatran orangutan born at Chester Zoo
A rare Sumatran orangutan has been born at Chester Zoo as part of a breeding programme to ensure the survival of endangered species.
The species, which is confined to a single island in South East Asia, is listed as critically endangered by the International Union for the Conservation of Nature (IUCN) so the zoo says "every birth is important".
The zoo's Deputy Curator of Mammals, Nick Davies, said: "It is very early days, but the baby looks very healthy and is bonding well with mum in these precious first few hours."
