Hemosep blood transfusion technology trialled at Nottingham City Hospital
A pioneering medical technique, which allows patients who need a transfusion to receive their own blood back is being trialled for the first time in Nottingham.
Jehovah's Witness Julie Penoyer, whose religion forbids her from being given another person's blood, became one of the first patients to use the Hemosep technology during major heart surgery.
Kirkby-in-Ashfield firm Brightwake helped to develop the technology being used at City Hospital.
Ben Williams from the company said that blood lost during the operation is simply filtered and returned to patients.
John Campbell from Nottingham University Hospitals said Hemosep also helps patients to recover quicker from operations.
