Rural crime costs £4.5m per year in Midlands

Rural crime is costing the Midlands about £4.5m a year, according to NFU Mutual.

Nicki Whittaker, from the firm, said: "We've been monitoring rural crime over the past decade and the real change that we've seen is that crime has gone from opportunist theft of small items to really highly organised criminal activity involving high-end equipment, very expensive tractors, livestock, tools and fuel."

In the latest incident, £30,000 worth of straw was reduced to ashes in a suspected arson attack in Wrockwardine, Shropshire.

Firefighters think it is the fifth arson incident in five weeks.
