School trials weight banding to reduce rugby concussions

Rugby players at a school in Somerset are being grouped into weight categories in an effort to reduce a rise in concussions.

Last term 20 students suffered head injuries at Wellington School.

The director of sport and wellbeing Steffan Jones said: "The difference in size of some of the players is frightening, because it's that puberty age.

"In boxing, you wouldn't put a feather weight with a heavy weight. It needs to be addressed and we're trying something different."
