Alton Towers crash victim 'improving'

A woman whose leg was amputated after a rollercoaster crash at Alton Towers is making a good recovery, her brother has said.

Leah Washington, 17, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, was one of five people who suffered severe injuries on the Smiler ride on 2 June.

Her brother Luke told BBC WM her "health and spirits had improved dramatically".

One carriage containing 16 people hit an empty one, trapping passengers for up to four and a half hours.

Merlin Entertainment, which owns Alton Towers has promised compensation for those most seriously injured.

An investigation, led by the Health and Safety Executive, is ongoing.

The theme park reopened to visitors on Monday, but the area containing the Smiler remains closed.
