Ipswich and Newcastle fans mark Sir Bobby Robson day

The crowd at Ipswich Town's Portman Road ground paid tribute to Sir Bobby Robson before the Championship match with Newcastle United which the home side won 3-1.

Sir Bobby, who died in 2009, is a sporting hero in the North East where he was born, learned the game of football and managed Newcastle United, as well as in Suffolk where he managed Ipswich.

Ipswich Town designated Monday as Sir Bobby Robson Day and it is the first time the two clubs have met in the Championship at Portman Road where his statue stands near the main entrance.

He was Ipswich Town manager from 1969 to 1982 before leaving to take over the role for England.

His football career ended at Newcastle United in 2004 after spells with clubs in Holland and Portugal.

Money raised at the Ipswich ground and at a fundraising dinner will go to the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation which supports cancer treatment at hospitals in Newcastle.
