Carillion could axe 1,000 solar panel jobs in Newcastle

A thousand North East workers have been told that their jobs are at risk after the government halved a green energy payment.

Carillion Energy Services has started a 90-day consultation with 4,500 staff nationwide working in renewable energy and the installation of rooftop solar panels.

The tariff paid to householders for electricity generated by the panels is expected to be cut on 12 December from 43p to 21p per unit.

Carillion said the result would be a "significant" reduction in its market.
