Crack threatens Lakes landmark

Part of a 275m (900ft) high crag in the Lake District is in danger of breaking away because of a crack which has developed.

The crack, which is 10cm (4in) wide in some parts, was discovered in Castle Rock, at St John's in the Vale, near Keswick, after an earthquake in 2010.

It could result in a chunk of stone - weighing an estimated 1,500 tonnes - falling off.

The section makes up part of the turret-shaped northern crag on the rock, which is popular with climbers.
