Hundreds say goodbye to Tyneside veteran they had never met

A World War Two veteran who died without any living relatives has been given a rousing farewell as hundreds of Tyneside well-wishers turned out to pay their respects.

John Campbell, 92, died in North Tyneside General Hospital in North Shields after living in a care home.

But the people of Whitley Bay decided his passing should be marked and more than 500 of them turned out at the town's crematorium for his funeral.

An appeal had been put online by the Royal British Legion Riders.

Mr Campbell had been awarded the Burma Star and had served with the Cameron Highlanders until 1951.
