Great North Run to celebrate its one millionth finisher

The organisers of the Great North Run are to mount a massive open-air celebration to mark the one millionth entrant who will complete the popular half marathon later this year.

The first ever event, which takes professional and fun runners from Newcastle to South Shields, took place in 1981.

This year's run, which takes place on 7 September, will feature a stunning opening ceremony and will include mass choreography, live music, and a giant floating sculpture on 4 September.
