Gertrude Bell: 'Queen of the Desert' exhibition opens

A huge array of personal items and memorabilia surrounding the famous archaeologist, writer and explorer, Gertrude Bell, have gone on show at the Great North Museum in Newcastle.

Gertrude spent the early 1900s travelling alone across the Middle East.

In her time, she rubbed shoulders with Winston Churchill and Lawrence of Arabia, and is affectionately known as "the uncrowned Queen of the Desert".

Gertrude, who was born in County Durham, went on to lead a quite extraordinary life.
