Robinson: DUP stands by Jim Wells after gay 'abuse' remarks

DUP leader Peter Robinson has stood by Health Minister Jim Wells, saying his comments were not the view of the Democratic Unionist Party and that on a better day he "wouldn't have made those".

On Thursday night, Mr Wells told a hustings event: "You don't bring a child up in a homosexual relationship. That a child is far more likely to be abused and neglected."

The DUP South Down candidate made the comments during a discussion on gay marriage.

He later apologised saying the past few weeks had "been extremely difficult" for him personally as he had "just come from a hospital visit".
