On August 27, 1979 the Queen's cousin Earl Mountbatten was killed by a bomb blast on his boat in Ireland.
Earl Mountbatten and his family were aboard his boat, Shadow V, which had just set off from the fishing village of Mullaghmore in County Sligo, when the IRA bomb detonated.
