Stormont MLAs vote to allow Westminster to control NI welfare changes

Stormont MLAs have voted to allow the UK government to roll out its welfare reforms in Northern Ireland.

The motion passed by 70 votes to 22 after Tuesday's political agreement between the DUP, Sinn Féin and the British and Irish governments.

The deal settled some of the issues which had been threatening the future of devolution, including the welfare budget.

However, during pointed exchanges, opponents of Wednesday's welfare motion criticised the DUP and Sinn Féin for passing Stormont's powers back to Westminster.
