The Somme: Tribute to first soldier from the 36th Ulster Division to die at the battle
Captain Richard Scott, from the 2nd Battalion of the Royal Irish Regiment, pays tribute to a soldier who was killed in a trench at Thiepval Wood.
Private McFadzean, was the first soldier from the 36th Ulster Division to die at the Somme on the morning of 1 July 1916. He died preparing for the attack after two live grenades exploded under him as he tried to protect his comrades.
The Lurgan-born soldier was posthumously awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery.
