School budgets protected from spending cuts

Ministers have agreed to protect the schools budget in England from the £83bn of cuts due to be announced in next week's Spending Review.

Over the past few days, other government departments have been asked to make even deeper cuts than they had already agreed to help fund the plan.

The decision comes after Nick Clegg announced proposals to spend £7bn on improving the education of children from the poorest households.
