David Cameron: Alternative Vote is not the answer
David Cameron has spoken out against the Alternative Vote system, as campaigning ahead of the 5 May referendum on electoral reform got under way in earnest.
The prime minister said that "the principle of 'one person, one vote' is what makes our democracy fair" and that AV "completely flies in the face of that".
Mr Cameron is in favour of maintaining the existing first-past-the-post system.
Earlier Deputy Prime Minister Nick Clegg launched his push for change, saying that the Alternative Vote system was fairer and that MPs would be forced to work harder to earn and keep their seats.
The government pledged to hold a vote on the issue in its coalition deal.
