Lords 'overplayed hand' on policing reform plans
Labour Lords who defeated the police reform bill that would have seen elected commissioners had "overplayed their hand", said the policing minister Nick Herbert.
The Conservative MP said the vote meant it would be very difficult to have a debate on checks and balances because "they chucked the whole thing out in spite of it being in the coalition agreement and the parties' manifestos".
The government suffered a surprise defeat in the House of Lords over its plans for changes to policing in England and Wales.
