Local elections: Labour make gains in England and Wales

Labour have made sweeping advances in the local elections in England and Wales during a night of heavy losses for the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats.

Labour said it was a "wake-up call" to the government to change course but the prime minister said he would stick with "the difficult decisions" to deal with the deficit.

Overall Labour gained 823 councillors. The Tories lost 405 and Lib Dems 336.
