Rail fare increase will make life better, says minister

Some rail fares in England will rise by 6.2% in January - about double the rate of inflation - although other price rises may be higher.

Rail Minister Theresa Villiers has insisted the increase would make a "huge contribution to a massive programme of rail improvements... to make life better for passengers".

However, she said the "longer-term" goal was to "get rid of these above-inflation fare rises altogether".
