Labour conference: opinion polls on party and Miliband

Labour has been leading the opinion poll ratings for months, but pollsters wondered why the lead was not bigger and found the public does not trust the opposition with the economy.

Andrew Hawkins of ComRes said Labour would still get a workable majority, but found the current lead "shocking".

Stephan Shakespeare of YouGov said there was a "softening of loyalty across all parties... especially Labour".

They spoke to Andrew Neil on the day a ComRes poll for the Independent showed Labour's lead falling, Conservatives holding steady, and the Liberal Democrats rising in the days after their party conference.

It also found 22% of people believed Mr Miliband would make a good prime minister, compared to 39% for David Cameron.
