Cuban Missile Crisis: Joan Bakewell and Peter Hennessy

The world came closer to war during the Cuban Missile Crisis than was realised at the time, the historian and cross-bench peer Peter Hennessy explained.

He said it was a "closer-run thing than we realised at the time" as he spoke of later revelations about what the US president did not know 50 years ago.

Broadcaster and peer Joan Bakewell recalled "we thought the world would end" and how "people walked around expecting a flash in the sky and the end of the world."

They spoke after watching British Pathe coverage of the crisis.
