Universities in England 'should fund grants'

Leading universities in England should provide weekly grants to help pupils from poorer backgrounds into top universities, according to former Labour minister Alan Milburn.

The report on higher education and social mobility says more attention should be paid to an applicant's background when university places are decided and recommends investing in pupils earlier, when they are still at school.
