It was not for Starbucks to "pick and choose" what taxes it paid and when in Britain, said Anna Walker from the UK Uncut pressure group, who dismissed its announcement on corporation tax as a "£10m PR stunt".

But Andrew Perloff, chairman of property investment company Panther Securities, said the firm gave jobs to 8,500 people.

He said it should not be subject to "taxation by media", and that there had been a "witchhunt".
