Merkel says EU and UK 'must compromise' over membership

German Chancellor Angela Merkel has said she is prepared to listen to Britain's wishes over its membership of the European Union.

David Cameron has promised a referendum on the UK's position in Europe if he is selected as prime minister at the next election.

Ms Merkel said she would listen to what Britain had to say, but said "compromises" must be found.
