Romania and Bulgaria: Heseltine on immigration figures
Lord Heseltine does not think the government should be forced to put its estimated immigration figures about Romanians and Bulgarians heading to the UK into the public domain.
The former deputy prime minister said the government got it "hopelessly wrong" over previous immigration figures and "no-one knows" this time, as restrictions on those two countries are to be lifted next year.
He said Britain needed engineers but wondered if they may come to the UK, and not to Germany where there are more jobs.
Communities Secretary Eric Pickles previously told Andrew Neil that he had seen figures, but admitted "I don't think anybody knows," adding that making them public could start a "scare story".
