MP questions shifting aid money to defence budget

An MP has questioned spending money from the UK's £10bn aid budget on peacekeeping and other defence-related projects - an idea being considered by the government.

Such a move could see funds diverted from the Department for International Development to the Ministry of Defence.

David Cameron, who has been urged to cut aid spending by some Tories, said security and stability were often needed before development could take place.

But Liberal Democrat MP, Sir Malcolm Bruce, who chairs the International Development Select Committee said a major switch is "simply not possible" if they want to hit the target they pledged to spend on international development.
