Food bank use rising with benefit changes says charity

Changes and delays to claimants' benefits are the biggest reason for people turning to food banks for help, the charity behind a network of food banks across the country has said.

The Trussell Trust said the number of people accessing its services was 290,000 in the last financial year, compared to 40,000 people in 2009-10 and Defra has commissioned research into the reasons why people end up needing food aid.

Susana Mendonca looked into whether the rise in food bank users was down to need, or because there are more of them around.

She spoke to Lorraine, a first-time user of a food bank on her reasons for going, to Trussell Trust executive chairman Chris Mould, Norwood and Brixton Food bank project leader Elizabeth Maytom, Labour MP Tessa Jowell and Conservative MP Andrew Selous.
