Thatcher papers show Falklands split

Some of Margaret Thatcher's papers dating from 1982 are made available to the public from Friday, at the Churchill Archives Centre in Cambridge.

They reveal her personal views about the Falklands conflict and how deeply split the Conservative Party was over the issue.

A note from the whips' office following Argentina's 1982 invasion included a comment from one Tory MP saying, "we're making a big mistake, it'll make Suez look like common sense".

The Margaret Thatcher Foundation's Chris Collins told the BBC: "Even some of her closest advisers weren't quite sure the war was really worth fighting."
