Same sex marriage: MPs debating bill in Commons

Government proposals to legalise same-sex marriage in England and Wales are being debated in the House of Commons, with ministers pledging to press on despite opposition from some MPs.

The landmark change was backed by a majority of MPs in February but Conservative critics have tabled an amendment to allow heterosexual couples to enter into civil partnerships.

Ministers warn this could delay the bill and cost billions of pounds.
