Gay marriage referendum call from David Burrowes MP

The British people should take part in a referendum over plans for gay marriage, a Tory MP has claimed.

David Burrowes said there was no mandate for the plan, also known as equal marriage. which he said was a "significant social change that needs to be dealt with properly."

Time columnist and former Tory MP Matthew Parris claimed it was a bid for opponents to defeat the measure, and it was unlikely a public vote would change many people's mind.

But he predicted the public would back the plan championed by David Cameron, should there be a referendum, as MPs have already done.
