Gay marriage: Deal to allow bill to proceed in Parliament

David Cameron has successfully seen off opposition from his own back benchers over plans to legalise same sex marriages in England and Wales.

Earlier, the government struck a deal with Labour which should allow the legislation to pass through the Commons unimpeded.

Ministers say they hope the first gay marriages will take place as early as summer next year.
