Nick Clegg warning over gay marriage bill vote

Nick Clegg has warned those who want to "hijack" the bid to legalise same-sex marriage in England and Wales that he would do "whatever I judge is best to safeguard the bill".

The deputy prime minister said he wanted the bill "to do what it says on the tin, which is to provide equal rights to marriage for same sex couples".

He appeared to be warning Conservative MPs who have tabled an amendment saying heterosexual couples should be allowed to have civil partnerships, if gay couples are allowed to get married.
