'Cancer is our number-one killer' - Jeremy Hunt defends drugs fund extension

The government has announced plans to extend a special fund for cancer drugs in England until 2016.

Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt said that the fund had so far helped 34,000 people, where they had frozen the NHS budget.

But he said in Wales the decision had been taken to cut the NHS budget, and they did not have the cancer drugs fund.

He said cancer sufferers were renting homes in England in order to access drugs.

The Cancer Drugs Fund in England is intended to pay for drugs which would otherwise be considered too expensive or not shown to make a big difference.

Critics have said that the money could be better spent elsewhere to help cancer prevention.
