Sir Michael Wilshaw on standards in English schools

A lot of the exams pupils were sitting "were not up to scratch" said a former headteacher who is now in charge of overseeing classroom standards in England.

But Sir Michael Wilshaw - the Chief Inspector of Schools and head of Ofsted - said schools had better teachers and better leaders, and he said the "big challenge is to make sure that that progress is maintained".

He told Andrew Neil that both he and Ofsted were independent of the government, as they spoke about leadership in schools, lessons from other countries, and the level of teacher training.
