UK Supreme Court 'has authority', says Simon Hughes

Liberal Democrat Justice Minister Simon Hughes has challenged Conservative plans to limit the power of the European Court of Human Rights, saying that in the present arrangement the UK Supreme Court "does in the end have authority".

He also rejected claims that the European Court of Human Rights is prone to making judgements that the UK does not agree with, saying that Britain subscribes to 95% of the decisions made in Strasbourg.

First broadcast on BBC Radio 4's Today programme on Thursday 17 July.
