Surprise UKIP defection by Tory MP Douglas Carswell

The prominent Conservative MP, Douglas Carswell, has announced he is defecting to the UK Independence Party.

He will resign as an MP, triggering a by-election in his Essex constituency of Clacton.

If he wins, he will deliver UKIP their first seat in parliament.

His defection took many by surprise but Mr Carswell said he was moving because the government was not being "serious about real change" in Europe.
