Tory Zac Goldsmith on recall bill to force by-elections

The Recall Bill proposed by the deputy prime minister was a "dangerous thing" which would make it "almost impossible" for voters to get rid of their errant MP, a Conservative politician has said.

Zac Goldsmith claimed handing power to the House of Commons, instead of voters, was the complete opposite of what recall was supposed to be.

Nick Clegg's plan could see an MP recalled and face a by-election, if the House of Commons authorities suspended them for at least 21 sitting days, followed by 10% of their voters signing a recall petition. MPs would also face recall if they received a prison sentence of less than 12 months.
