Clacton: Douglas Carswell becomes first elected UKIP MP
The former Tory MP Douglas Carswell has become the first UKIP candidate to be elected to the House of Commons.
He won the Clacton seat in Essex, with a majority of 12,404 votes over his former party.
The new MP said in his speech after the declaration to his constituents "I answer first, foremost and last to you. You are my boss, I will not let you down."
He also looked ahead to the Rochester and Strood by-election, where his friend Mark Reckless has also resigned as a Tory MP to fight for his seat as a UKIP candidate.
